Can I Do Whatever I Want?

You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything… But you can’t say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality.(1 Corinthians 6)

I think we have all heard of the preachers of the early 20th century delivering messages of "hell, fire and brimstone". That message turned a lot of people off but it also ushered in the repentance that led to the 2nd great awakening in the Church. In recent years the main message of the church has been the message of grace. It is a beautiful thing, the amazing grace of our God. Unfortunately we have swung to far toward grace and that is what the Apostle Paul is addressing in the verse above.

Some in the early Church felt that they could engage in any kind of sin they desired because they were under grace. Many men in the modern church have embraced this as well. I have even heard the verse above quoted out of context. "I am allowed to do anything, but not everything is good for me so...moderation in all things!"

Here are the verses that precede the one above.

Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality,or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.

Since Paul gave this list a few verses prior it is clear we are NOT allowed to do anything we want under the grace that God provides. He actually says that engaging in certain activities will keep you from inheriting the Kingdom of God! Are you engaging in any of these sins? I think the Church is filled with people who will be surprised on judgment day when Jesus says to them,

‘I never knew you. Go away from Me, you who do wrong!’ (Matt 7:23) I don't want to be one of them. Do you?

1. What is the Holy Spirit wanting to pull you specifically away from today?

2. What is the Holy Spirit wanting to draw you towards today?

Fight! Every. Day.
